As director, producer, performer, and voice instructor I have been on every spectrum of the audition process. I have had many questions about how one is to prepare for an audition, namely “Esther” the musical. I am releasing this helpful information on auditioning because I want you to be at your best. Whether you know it or not every director, producer or casting agent is rooting for you because if you bring out your best, then it is a win-win situation. Therefore, here are a few helpful tips to ready you for what I know is going to be an exciting production.
1. Take care of your voice. Wear a scarf during the winter season, no screaming, and avoid all dairy products a few days before. Reward yourself after the audition. I always recommend snacking on apple slices prior to your audition, steam, and drink “Throat Coat Tea.”
2. View the trailer of “Esther” to familiarize yourself with the style of music. This helps in picking out songs that are similar in nature. Never do a song from the actual show you are auditioning for, unless otherwise instructed. Make sure you bring your music in the format requested such as CD, MP3, flash drive, or sheet music.
3. Make sure you know your music so that you are not struggling with trying to remember the lyrics.
4. Walk in pleasant when approaching the director’s table and accompanist. Remember to give the accompanist a tempo of the song you are singing. In addition, always walk in with your music away from the director or audience. If you make any mistakes or are not feeling well, do not apologize and keep going.
5. Dress appropriately; remember first impressions are made within the first seven seconds upon entering. In addition, your audition starts the minute you drive into the lot of the facility.
6. Sing your heart out and limit the amount of movements. This will vary from director to director. As for myself, I do not mind seeing some movement, which shows command of your performance.
7. Be polite, patient, and do not be afraid to ask questions.
8. Familiarize yourself with the show you are doing researching reading materials.
9. Have fun because in the end the director wants to see that they will enjoy spending the next several months with you.
10. Audition as often as possible and always appreciate any role you are offered.
I hope these few tips will help you prepare for your auditions. Feel free to reach out with any questions you may have, we are always here to help.
